Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies Competition is pleased to announce a competition for three PhD studentships funded as part of an ESRC Professorial Fellowship award awarded to Professor Celia Lury on the topic ‘Order and Continuity: Methods of Change in a Topological Society’. Professor Lury will act as the primary supervisor for each successful applicant, with a second supervisor from a relevant department at Warwick.
The primary objective of the Fellowship is to investigate the claim that contemporary society is becoming topological in a series of projects designed to investigate whether or not the topological characteristics of ordering and continuity of transformation can be identified across the domains of economy, politics and culture. A particular focus will be the role of the mixed or composite methods of modeling, measuring and mapping in the enactment of change and continuity. Professor Lury will be responsible for the Fellowship, but there are three linked PhD projects:
PhD Studentship 1. Economic models and economic life
This project will investigate the use of a range of modeling techniques in economics. The focus will be on exploring how these approaches construct relations between models and the world and the terms they afford for the conduct of economic life.Students with a first degree and Masters in Economics or Sociology preferred but anyone with relevant qualifications is encouraged to apply.
PhD Studentship 2. Mapping political spaces
This project will carry out research into the role of mapping techniques in the emergence of the political spaces of Europe. It asks: How do mapping practices shape the possibilities of political inclusion and exclusion, and for whom? A second aim is to create new mappings and/or cartographic practices to support different kinds of political participation and inclusion in collaboration with a range of key stakeholders and inhabitants.Students with a first degree and Masters in Political Science, Geography, Architecture, Design or Sociology are preferred but anyone with relevant qualifications is encouraged to apply.
PhD Studentship 3. Digital economies and publics
This project will study digital media to see whether and how they are enabling new forms of economic value production. This may include mapping the presence of social media tracking devices on the web and, through the use of qualitative methods in commercial, government and third sector organisations, investigate their use in practices of data-mining and data-exchange. A second aim is to build and operate new tools to explore experimentally their productive and performative capacities.
Applicant Information. Each studentship will provide tuition fees and a maintenance grant but is subject to strict eligibility guidelines. Details about the maintenance grant amounts and eligibility can be found on the ESRC website. In addition to this funding, there will be training available through Warwick’s ESRC Doctoral Training Centre at the Faculty and Departmental level. This training will be tailored to the individual award holder’s needs and research area in accordance with a compulsory training needs assessment performed at the beginning of the PhD programme. To qualify for the continued payment of ESRC funding the award holder will have to prove that they are following successfully a designated pathway through the Doctoral Training Centre.
Eligibility. To be eligible for a full award (stipend and fees), you must have:
– Settled status in the UK, meaning there are no restrictions on how long you can stay.
– Been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for three years prior to the start of the studentship grant. This means you must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences).
– Not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. This does not apply to UK and EU nationals.
To be eligible for a fees only award, you:
– must be ordinarily resident in an EU member state, in the same way as UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK.
