Job Description:

Research at the Department of Sociology is mainly theory-based empirical research with a clear connection to society. Our research can be undertaken in connection with one of the three research groups at the Department – Intersectional Studies, Identity and order and Welfare and life course – or in the form of separate research projects. We are now recruiting three postdoctoral positions in sociology, with an appointment term of two years, with a view to offering the opportunity for teaching based employment for a further period.

Postdoctoral researcher in Sociology

The project is to be defined by the applicant. Previous experience that matches the current research profile of the department is desirable.

Postdoctoral researcher in Sociology, with particular reference to an existing project entitled ‘värdering och utvärdering’ (valuation and evaluation) (ERC)The project will be designed in close cooperation with the leader of the project (Aspers). The work will involve participation in the qualitative and quantitative determination of forms, institutions and organization for valuation and evaluation within and outside the financial economy, such as markets, peer-reviewing, quality review and various appointments of prizes and awards. An important aspect of this project is an estimation of these structures and changes over time in developed countries. Applicants should have previous experience of similar research and/or good methodological knowledge for this research. Postdoctoral researcher in Sociology, with particular reference to the economy, organization and work life.

The project is to be defined by the applicant and will be under one or more of the following headings: economic sociology, organizational sociology or sociology of work. Applicants should have previous experience of similar research and/or good methodological knowledge for this research. Previous experience that matches the current research profile of the department is desirable.

Work tasks: The work consists of 80 percent research and 20 percent teaching. The employee shall be based on the department and take an active part in its activities.

Qualifications required: Doctoral degree in Sociology. To qualify for a position as a postdoctoral researcher you must hold a doctorate, or a foreign exam which is equivalent to a doctorate, in Sociology. The degree must have been awarded within three years before the deadline for this application. The ability to teach in Swedish or English is required, as well as a good command of English, both spoken and written.

Criteria for ranking: In ranking qualified applicants, special consideration will be given to (1) academic skills, (2) the potential of the project described.

Doctoral Fellowship at MaxPo

The Max Planck Sciences Po Center on Coping with Instability in Market Societies (MaxPo) invites applications for doctoral fellowships. The recipients of the PhD fellowship will work under the supervision of Prof. Olivier Godechot or Prof. Cornelia Woll and will have to apply for formal enrollment in the doctoral programs in sociology or political science of Sciences Po in Paris.

The thesis project should be linked to MaxPo’s research program focused on coping with instability in market societies and the interests of the two research group leaders, though empirical research topics may be quite varied. The research themes should be located in economic sociology or political economy and can include:

–          financial markets, labor markets, credit markets and more generally all market phenomenon, social and spatial stratification and inequality, income satisfaction and social reactions to inequality, the political and social consequences of economic crises, the moral boundaries of the economy, economics and social sciences and the framing of economic realities.

–          the politics of financial regulation, international governance of economic policy, conflict and power in domestic and transnational policy-making, business-government relations or the transformation of state-society relations more generally, comparative institutional analysis of economic policy-making.

Eligibility: The candidate will hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) and have received training in the following disciplines: sociology or political science, with additional training in related field such as economics, history, management, or philosophy. She or he should have experience with qualitative and quantitative methods. There is no nationality requirement. However, a firm command of English and working knowledge of French or German are required.

Fellowship amount: € 2,100 / month (gross salary, about € 1,600 net); 3-year contract starting on October 2014; one 12-weeks teaching or administrative requirement, preferably in the first year of the fellowship (to be negotiated with the PhD adviser).
