A cogent appraisal of the spirit of contemporary capitalism and its problems calls for renewed attention to the performative. Business schools, consultancy firms, corporations, investment banks, start-up companies, market research agencies, public administrations and other sites of business life are characterized by the presence of habits, idioms and apparatuses that constitute a significant part of the reality of business. These include techniques for the simulation of business situations, methods for the explanation of business problems, instruments for the valuation of business endeavours, and tools for the presentation of business outcomes. But simulation, explanation, valuation and presentation are not only about accounting for external states of affair. They are, at least in part, about moulding, enacting, provoking and effecting the business realities they signify. Continue reading

Nuevo número de la muy interesante revista Limn. El número está dedicado a “Food Infrastructures” y es descrito de la siguiente forma:

“This issue of Limn analyzes food infrastructures and addresses scale in food production, provision, and consumption. We go beyond the tendency towards simple producer “push” or consumer “pull” accounts of the food system, focusing instead on the work that connects producers to consumers. By describing and analyzing food infrastructures, our contributors examine the reciprocal relationships among consumer choice, personal use, and the socio-material arrangements that enable, channel, and constrain our everyday food options.”

Nuestro corresponsal en Londres, Manuel Tironi, envía la siguiente noticia: “El pasado viernes 13 de diciembre Juan Felipe Espinosa defendió exitosamente su tesis “Organizing Technological Innovation: An empirical study of Venture Medical Device Companies” en la School of Management, University of Leicester. La tesis fue dirigida por Steve Brown y el comité evaluador estuvo compuesto por Javier Lezaun (Oxford) y Maria Puig de la Bellacasa (Leicester). La tesis estudia el rol de los dispositivos en el fenómeno de la innovación tecnológica en dos empresas nacientes del área de la tecnología médica”. ¡Muchas felicitaciones Juan Felipe!
